Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Parents Asking For Background Check

I have a potential new mother ask me if she can run a background check on me. I told her that I have had my FBI background check a few yrs ago... (less than 5 yrs I think)... any way I told her if it made her feel better than she can run a background check ...

Have you had anyone ask you this? And what do you say? I have nothing to hide, but just wondered if anyone here has been asked this?

I have never been asked that as I am a licensed child care provider and all licensed providers in my state have background checks done bi-annually through the licensing process. (this includes ALL family members in the home over age 13).

I wouldn't care as I have nothing to hide but at the same time, is she offering to give you her background check as well?

I get that she is leaving her child with you, but you are also inviting her (and family) into your home so.... just sayin'

If the background checks asks for personal information too such as my SS# and/or driver's license # and what-not, I don't think I would want to be providing all that info to a bascially perfect stranger....kwim?

I've only been asked once, and I have no problem with it. If it means that the parent will be more at ease leaving their child with a stranger (because really, that's what we are when we first take on a family), then I have absolutely no issues giving permission!

I keep and show a copy of my police check at interviews. I have never seen a parent give it more than a cursory glance. I would expect someone to have one if they were caring for my child but I also would never assume that it covers them from being loco and would still do all in my power to weed through carefully.

I have no problem with it. If it was going to cost money, I would let her cover the fee. Mine is done yearly for licensing. Even with that I had someone ask to do her own. I think she was a forensic scientist or something and worked for the state police department. I figure we run background checks (criminal AND financial) on our clients for our rental business. These parents are putting their children's lives into our hands, they have the right to know.

I've never had anyone ask. All licensed providers are required to do it though.
I would say the same thing. If it makes you more comfortable, go for it!

She might just be careful about her choice of provider, but Was there any other indications that she was overprotective?

This is her first time looking into home child care. Her Dad is a sheriff officer.. works high up in the sheriff's office..so all I needed to do was provide my name and he was going to run it for her. She has done Day care facilities and he is in one now... but she is having some issues with them.

I completely understand why she is doing it.. wants to make sure who is going to be keeping her child and what not..

I am legally unlicensed in my state... My limit is 4 (and to be honest that is all I want..)

I don't think she is being overprotective, just being careful and doing her job as a mom should.. making sure her son will be well cared for...

One of my DCG'S dad is an RCMP officer, so Im pretty sure both me and my husband have been checked into. My hubby went through a pretty bad streak when we were 22, after he lost his mom. He did alot of stupid things, but i think what happens in the past is in the past, as long as it doesnt involve hurting children.

It's the same here in WI, except they do them every 3 months for everyone in the house over 12.

I would agree that I am not willing to give my ss# or DL number out. I would direct them to my licenser, who could confirm what a background check in WI entails. If that wasn't enough, I'd pass on the client.

I just read through some of the older threads and came across an idea I like...offer to swap criminal background checks with the potential DCF...

I like it!

We are required to have them done as I am licensed.

I wouldn't have an issue with having them run one on me. I can see why they would, they want to make sure their child is in safe hands.
