Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Do You Allow Drop-Off After Doctor's Appointment?

Do you allow doctors appointments in the middle of the day?

For instance, DCB is going to the doctor again today. He's gone to a few because of a chronic ear infection.

He got dropped off at 6:30am and then he's being picked up at 9:30am for his doctor's appointment. I'm not sure how long it will take or how long he will be gone. Do you allow them to be dropped off again after appointments??

I do, with a note stating they can return today.

Usually the parent will give me an approximate time they will be gone.

I would allow them to return after routine checks or with a doctor's note for illnesses. When my ds was in dc I would often have to schedule his regular checks earlier in the day because that's the only time his doctor would take those appointments. Same thing with his dentist.

I would depending on what it is for. I've actually never had a client drop off their child again after a Doctor's appointment, though. The appointments were sometimes around 12:00 (so they picked up after lunch and before nap) but most seem to be at the end of the day. If the child has a sibling in care, they'll pick the sibling up at normal time. It works out well.

I might try saying to that DCB, "I'll see you tomorrow, DCB! Have fun at the Doctor!" and see what Mom says.

Yes, it is no problem.

Yes I did allow it... and this happened several times. Parents would explain that they need to go back to their jobs!

I sometimes found out on Facebook that they just went back to shopping or do other errands... But I decided to ignore that because I think parents are like kids: If you have too many rules, chances are they will be broken very frequently and you'll be frustrated all the time... and therefor I kept it simple... for children and their parents... and me.

Depending on what it is for, and when they plan to drop off. Not after vaccinations or sick child appointments (rechecks and physicals with no immunizations are fine) No drop offs during nap, and if they arrive after meals, they need to be fed.

This is pretty much my rules. Most of my parents typically tend to make appointments first thing in the morning and just bring the kids late or as close to the end of the day as possible and just pick them up early though.

I'm with Daycarediva as far as not after shots or illness check ups. I do have in my handbook that I do not take kids during nap. In my experience they haven't had the time to wind down and get into relax mode like the other kids so it takes longer for them to go to rest and mine are such light sleepers that they wake up every time the door bell rings or they hear the alarm.

One drop off per day per child
One pick up per day per child

NO exceptions.

If the child is getting a vaccination or starting a new med then they cannot come back for 24 hours.

If its just a well child visit then they can come to daycare for the day. I also agree with one drop off and one pickup per day and have it in my contract.

I agree..No problem for me if kids come back, unless of course they are sick. I also feel the more rules the more they break them.

It honestly hasn't happened often enough for me to be bothered by it. Most parents try to make the appointments for first thing in the AM, thus coming in late (fine by me as long as I know in advance) or later in the PM so they can pick up early. This is one area I haven't had any issues to feel another rule is warranted.

Absolutely not. I only allow ONE drop off/day. If a child has a morning appointment, they may only be dropped off AFTER the appointment (this is also the only time I allow drop offs after 9am). If the child has a mid day or afternoon appointment - they may be dropped off BEFORE the appointment and then I won't see the child again until the next business day.

As long as it isn't in the middle of the nap. If they pick up after 12, then they can't come back until after 3pm (nap ends) and usually by that point they just keep them home.

After joining this forum, I adopted BlackCat's policy.

My parents usually try to do early am appointments and then bring them after. As long as they are good to return to care it's fine with me. Agree not during nap time though....

I do. If they come back during nap then I would just let them sit with me or bring their cot into the playroom. I use my son's bedroom as the nap room so they won't bother anyone anyways, unless of course they throw a fit when being dropped back off. I haven't had to encounter this yet though.

It just all depends on why they went to the doctor. Most parents have to return to work. I do ask them though, to please make the appointment early enough so that they are not returning them right in the middle of lunch or during nap, as you all know, that is very disruptive.

Depends on what it's for, and not during nap time. For instance, if they have an ear infection and need antibiotics, then no, they are disqualified from returning because they need to be on antibiotics for a full 24 hours before returning. I am also iffy about vaccinations because I don't want a reaction on my watch.

Where I work we allow that.
