Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>I Asked For Spray Sunscreen So They Bring Lotion
crazydaycarelady 08:01 AM 05-13-2014
I'm so annoyed! This family has been with me for several years. Each year at the beginning of spring/summer I asked each family to bring one bottle of sunscreen. I gave them a picture of several varieties of the continuous spray kind and explain that it makes it much easier to apply when you are doing up to 10 children at once.

So today dcd of two FT kids shows up with lotion.

WHY?

Why when your daycare lady asks for a certain kind do you not bring that kind? It's not hard to find. It's not more expensive.

I HATE rubbing lotion on kids. UGH!

Send it back home and tell them to bring the right spray.

I'd be really annoyed too. But at least you can use the spray kind. We have to use lotion(licensing rule) and reapply every two hours. By the time im done its time to start again.

Why does licensing have to dictate everything? Why would they care what kind you use?

I hate all lotions because no matter what they require me to rub them in.

I would just send it back home and tell them you need the right one.

Of all, spray is easier to use if only sprayed outside....

Some of the sprays have been deemed unsafe so a lot of places are recommending using a lotion only and no sprays.

I require my DCK's to come WITH sun screen already applied.
Saves me a ton of time when we are heading out.

I will reapply in the afternoon if necessary.

I would simplify it for them ... give them another copy of the letter you sent out with the description "sunscreen spray" highlighted in bright yellow and underlined and ask them to bring the right one back or offer to buy it for them and add it to their next balance.

Other than extra clothing, diapers and wipes I honestly don't ask parents for anything because they'll just bring what they feel like bringing (or don't bring it at all) and "if you want something done, you have to do it yourself" .

I have extra shoes in every whole size from size 3 to size 9 because parents forget to bring shoes for their child .... SHOES ... I mean c'mon SHOES!!!

I'd rather save myself the headache and go out and buy the dang [insert name of whatever supply I need, that parents won't bring, here] myself.

This!!!

I have the same policy. I don't have the time it takes to rub each child's arms, legs and face, wash my hands and THEN go outside. Kids don't have that kind of patience and neither do I.

Either they bring you what you requested or their child goes without.

Spray is dangerous and shouldn't be used on children. Its banned at the summer camp my son attends. The mist from the spray is breathed in by the kids. Lotions only when dealing with young children.

I use the copper tone water babies pump foam on he littles and the spray in the bigger kids.

I love love love the foam!! It's so so much easier than lotion and it's so quick.

I have my kids cover their faces with a towel when I spray sunscreen. I use a stick on their faces and then have them rub it in.

Ditto. I also ask them to put it on while the kid is naked, so that when we peel layers throughout the morning, or put on a suit, they are covered.

I do something similar with bug spray: I have them pull their sun hat down over their face. That way their hats and hair are sprayed, which helps keep bugs off their faces.

I require that they come with lotion on in the morning. I ask each parent every morning. If they say they didn't have time, I hand them the bottle of lotion and say, "Well, I have seven kids so if you didn't have time for one you know I don't have time for seven!" with a big, fat smile. No one has ever complained.

I reapply after nap. It's easy when they are being changed anyway and I only have one at a time. Lotion on the body, stick on the face.

LOL! That's why I supply everything, too.

This is how I do it, too. Otherwise, I have to wash my hands, lotion one kid. Wash my hands, lotion the next..... it would take me 1/2 hour to get them done (and keep them out of trouble while I am doing it, too).

I have parents apply it first thing in the morning, then reapply at our 10:30 potty break, then reapply after nap.

I just use lotion... I never really thought about spray and why I do or do not use spray. It's always a PITA anyway and like someone else pointed out, you have to rub the spray anyway! I usually have parents bring me a bottle at the beginning of the hot season and I use it for everyone equally unless there's an allergy or something like one DCG. She can only use one type of sunscreen. I only have 4-5 kids at a time so it's not a huge pain, just what we do first thing in the morning when we go outside and again after nap time when we go out.

Wow

I was looking at a couple of threads that Blackcat mentioned to get more info on spray vs lotion and I ended up reading this post from a year ago that got very intense! I haven't come across anything like this on this forum before so I was a bit surprised.

THAT thread surprised you?! Then you haven't read The Thread That Never Ends . Those threads come and go, it tends to happen in cycles sometimes also as we are mostly women with strong passions and emotions, sometimes they're trolls. For the most part we kiss and make up and are friends again much like the the kids we care for. Some have left the forum because of this, some have (thankfully) returned. Others (thankfully) have not .

LOL! That is one of the more interesting reads....

There are several that got pretty intense a time or two.

Yes. I only spray outside with the wind going behind us so the mist is carried away as much as possible. I use a face stick on their faces. This process takes 15 minutes for 11 children.

If I had to rub lotion on every child it would take over 55 minutes because I would be required to rub it in and then wash my hands after touching each child with my hands. That is NOT happening. I send home any lotion and tell them, "SPRAY, please."

I actually do not rub the spray. The only spray that comes out white and globby is Coppertone for babies (pink bottle). All other sprays work wonderfully and are a sheer mist with no rubbing required at all (Banana Boat, target brand, walgreens brand, etc.).

Good to know! I may have to make a switch!

I don't have to rub the spray either, it comes out in a fine mist (the spray lotion has to be rubbed in) but not the CONTINUOUS SPRAY. I use a stick on their faces which I provide myself.

I'm rethinking now. I usually have parents provide sunscreen. However I REALLY like the continuous spray myself. I may just supply it myself so I know I'm getting what I want to use. It is not a fun task to lotion up 6 (or more) kids a couple times a day. As far as I know there are no regulations about using spray here, although I have to check to make sure

. When I send home a note requesting sunscreen, I capitalize, enlarge and bold the word SPRAY SUNSCREEN several times. They always get the hint.

I buy one bottle of spray and bill each family $1.00. That pays for it. They must sign a form and write the brand. They fill it in with the brand I buy. I ask them ahead of time if this is okay. No one has had a problem with it.

I hate having 6-8 different bottles of sunscreen to sort out each day. I spray it on the kids outside too.

I did this! I capitalized CONTINUOUS SPRAY and even included this picture!

To the above poster - how often do you have to do this? I mean buy a bottle?

I have each family bring one bottle. I use the same bottle until it is gone so I only have one out at a time. When these are all gone then I buy it. I am just not willing to spend $$ to buy ALL of it for the whole summer.

When they handed it to me, I wouldn't have taken/accepted it. Just send it back in their bag with a sticky note and the same print out you gave them with the photos.

This is exactly what I do. I also apply outside as the spray gets on my floors.

Maybe you could just say:

Dear DCP's

If you don't supply the required sun screen (the one that matches the picture provided) then your child will NOT have sun screen applied to them.

If you choose to supply a different brand/type you will need to stop by the daycare at 10:00 a.m., 12:00, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to apply and re-apply sun screen to your child.

Thank you for using your listening skills!

Sincerely

Daycare Provider who does NOT want greasy hands!!
