What are some ridiculous requests you have gotten from parents?

I just received a request to please stop allowing a child to get wet shoes due to him going home with wet shoes 2 days in a row. We play outside twice a day and often times the sprinklers wet the grass at the parks thus getting each child's (and my own!) shoes wet. I responded that the child could be sent in rain boots, crocs, or with another pair of shoes but I will not restrict them to just the sidewalk for play.

Please do not leave dolls and other girl's toys in the reach of my 18 mos son (Termed)

Please allow my son to pee in the playground, he is used to go outside when needed (umm NO)

Please don't give my kid any juice or milk we are trying to watch calories intake, but you can give her pop-tartz she loves them ()

I'm sure I got more

Please let Johnny skip nap today.

Make sure Jane eats ALL her lunch today.

Susie has a cough, she needs to stay inside today.

******************************************************

Those are not necessarily odd requests but they ARE ridiculous.... simply that the parent actually expects that I am able to manage those things WHILE caring for 9 other kids.

My ALL time favorite ridiculous request:

Can you hold this check until next week?

OR

Would it be ok if I just pay you next week?

or some version of the above.

Oh lord. The ever present "just spank them" suggestion for bad behavior.

Keep dcb out of princess dress up clothes. And away from dolls.

Sing and rock and walk 1 year old to sleep everyday.

at interview:
".we bounce dcg in our arms to get her to sleep" (she was 9 months old). ummm, no I can't do although I am sure it would be a good workout. I did not accept them into care.

Or-

DCD has later work hours now (didn't have to be at work until 7:30, used to need to be in office at 6:45) due to a new position but we will still drop off at 6:15 & we will now need to pick up later (at 5). I'm sure you won't mind watching the kiddos an extra 1/2 hr each day for free. NO. Just NO

Can you make sure to change sons diaper right after he goes? (Because if you don't it will fly right out the sides, he had diarrhea all weekend)

Will you take them if I just have them wear socks and gloves all day? (In reference to active hfmd infection)

Can you just give him a spoonful of honey? (Child was coughing so hard he was near throwing up and his face was turning purple)

Can't we just wait two hours until my husband gets off work to get the spare set? (Parent who's child was locked in their vehicle in my driveway)

From child, as her brother was locked inside the family's vehicle in my driveway for an hour past closing....Miss J, can I play with that? ( my dogs had been locked up for 10 hours, I wasnt waiting any longer, throwing fetch with a chuck it to release some pent up energy) No. My dogs are big and need to run around for awhile over there, I don't want them accidentally knocking you over...... (child turns to mom and demands through a giant pissed off stream of SCREEEEAAAAMS)......MOOOOOOOOOMMMMY, I WANT TO PLAY WITH THOSE DOOOOOGIES....MAKE MISS J LET ME PLAY WITH THOSE DOGGIES RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!! Mom looked at me but the horrified/shocked/disgusted look plastered on my face made her think twice about opening her mouth).

All from the same family. I could unfortunately go on for days

While this didn't happen to me but a fellow provider a few years ago. It is so out there that it should be told. lol

The day before Thanksgiving one of her dcm's came in with a whole uncooked turkey and asked her to cook it for her because she was going to be too busy to do it herself!!! Sadly she was so shocked by the request she actually cooked the darn thing!

Um..wow?

That's probably the BEST (and saddest) thing I've ever heard in response to this question.

Did the DCM atleast invite the provider to dinner?

DCM #1: Johnny Doe didn't go to sleep until 10:00 PM. We need to discuss naps.

Me: No we don't, part of my program. I made it perfectly clear during orientation.

DCM #2: You should go organic.

Me: The only thing organic about my program is the poop in diapers. We went over this in orientation.

DCM #2: I know. But can't you try?

Me: We you hire me as a nanny at $17 an hour, yes.

DCM #2: Miss _____ you are so funny!

Me: So are you.

SAHM- 20 minutes before pickup-- "Hey, I just want to let you know I will be picking DCG up late today, we are getting ready to go shopping in Annapolis (1 hours away). I'll let you know when we are coming back across the bridge."

Umm NO. Obviously I told her to take dcg with her because that was not happening.

Worst request ever was.....dcm asked every holiday if I could watch her child because I am with kids anyways, meaning my own children. She was a nsingle mom and preffered to spend her days off, even holidays, with her boyfriends. I would take the child if it were not horribly inconvenient because I felt so bad for him. My home was probably the only family experience he ever had.

When I worked in a preschool, I had a parent tell me in a stern voice that her child was to wear his snow pants everyday that she packed them. (I got along well with her, but she was a parent that was very intimidating). She was very surprised to find her son, in the sandbox, wearing snow pants on a 70" day. She had packed them, and so I followed the orders. She looked horrified when she picked him up, but I think she learned her lesson

The time that provider (I think it was her) had a dck pull down her pants in front of dcd belongs in the embarrassing moments thread too!

Gosh she had some fun stories!

I guess I should add one too!

The time I had a dcm walk through the door with her child puking into a bucket he was carrying under his face and said she had to get to work, it just happened and it was too late to keep him home.

I was fairly new to dc and shocked, so I kept him.

Later I found out the employees had sick child care available at her work! (she was a nurse).

They were my first term.

an interview once

Parent- What do you serve for meals that are healthy?

Me- I went on and on and on

Me- Then I thought maybe I should ask what the child likes, feel the parent out a little bit. So I asked if the child had any allergies and what the child likes to eat at home for meals?

Parent- Raimon noodles, french fries, nuggets, fruit loops and some other off the wall food that you wouldn't feed a six month old. Then parent goes on to tell me and go ahead and let that diaper fill right up because they are expensive and can't afford them

Not exactly a "request", but more of a dumb interview question. I'm sure she was just nervous, and this was her first (and ended up to be her only) kid.

Regarding her newborn, she asked, "You don't shake them do you?"

I have teacher dcps and they are far and away the most difficult and demanding parents I have! The mom didn't want me giving her child Cheerios because they contain sugar, so she brought her version of Cheerios...which may contain traces of peanuts, after she signed a notice that I have a child in care with a life threatening peanut allergy. "But yours have sugar in them!"
Nobody here is deathly allergic to sugar, lady.

I'm also wondering what a CFer is?

It happened 14 years ago. I ended up taking the infant and she grew up in my Daycare. I had her until she was 11 1/2. We're still friends with her and her parents. Mom is deaf, and sometimes just doesn't "get" social norms. Love the family to pieces. Mom was just nervous and wanted to cover all bases I guess.

It's nothing like daycare.com

It doesn't have anywhere near the traffic to the child care section. It DOES have a slammin archive. Goes way back. I think it's the biggest child care board archive on the net.

The archives are valuable. I suggest going to the beginning and reading the threads that have ten or more replies. If you are interested in seeing issues as they evolve over time in child care it is a good resource. Ivillage used to maintain their archive too but I don't know if they still do. I think it goes back to the early 2000's

Yes it is worth joining, great group of ladies but yes it has slowed down considerably I was so glad to find a group of providers here that are also nice and helpful. Oh yes the archives..... hmmm I do not think I will out myself. but if reading the archives look up the pirate and lemon chicken and the turkey story. great memories. many of the core group have gone on to other careers over the years.

Me: ....I'm sure his hair will dry before we go outside four hours from now, and just imagine how wet HE would have been if he didnt have his jacket on to protect him from the rain.

I just thought of this request from a parent I had about 8 years ago. Dad was a real weirdo. Strange ideas. He came in to drop off the boy and told me that I could just cut off the sleeves on the boys shirt instead of the mom always buying new clothes when the season changed. (he was an ultimate cheap skate). I had a young girl working for me at the time and we really had to keep from acting shocked until he left. This is the same parent that asked me not to give him any milk at all because it gives him a beer belly.

DCM never sends what her child needs for the day so one day DCG got soaked after falling in a puddle outside.
Of course DCG had no change of clothes and could not stay inside all muddy and wet so I called DCM to pick her up or send clothes.
DCM says - Well can't you just put some of your son's clothes on her? (He is 2 years older than her)
I could but why should I? Take care of your child and send the things she needs for daycare!

I got this last Monday! LOL DCM - Can you put DCG's shoes and coat in the dryer because it got wet over the weekend and I didn't have time to dry it.

Me - That's too bad because I don't have time today either with 6 little kids here plus I don't do shoes in the dryer. Guess you'll have to go home and grab a pair of boots and a heavy sweater or something.

What is wrong with people??!

It should show ALL posters you quoted in your reply box. Type your text above, below or among the quoted words. Hopefully that makes sense.

This happened yesterday:

Provider accepts DCK in care going against her gut. DCM claims the child is not ill. Minutes later provider offers DCK breakfast. DCK refuses, "My mom said I can't eat or drink anything today. So I don't throw up."

Provider calls DCM to pick up DCK. DCM requests a refund for the day.

DCM: Ugh the baby stinks! We were so busy last night I didn't have time to bathe her.

Me: Oh one night doesn't hurt, can't be that bad!

DCM: (hands me the baby) More like a week, if you can't stand the smell feel free to give her a bath. I'm late though so gotta run. Thanks bye!

Omg, this child smelled like dirty feet, vinegar and sweat all rolled into one! I gave the poor kid a bath because she honestly made me sick to my stomach every time she wanted to sit on me or get a hug

I did have one parent ask me to make sure her son used two fewer diapers a day. I was confused and asked her if she wanted me to leave him in a wet or soiled diaper in order for her to save money. she said no, change him if he needs it, just make sure he goes fewer times during the day. what the what?!?! I guess she thought I was some sort of baby magician and can control their bodily functions. Needless to say, she was strange and got termed down the road. She didnt feel that her son should be reprimanded for aggressive behavior because he was just snuggling in a different way than the other kids. the other kids should learn that he was just trying to snuggle. she was termed when her snuggler jumped on my daughter and close fist punched her in the back until I had to physically rip him off her. He was only a year old!!!

we have one of those and use it with our own kids. there is a filter so that nothing comes up too high towards the users mouth. it looks weird but it works way better and more gently than the bulb suctioners.

This one always makes me wonder if she was okay with other children "aggressively snuggling" her child... I have one (the one I am always posting about ) whose mom thinks everything he does is excused because "he is only 1.5, now 2, now 3, now 4, now 5 yo" but if another child even "makes him sad" by not talking to him the way he wants to be talked to it is the end of the world

I dragged my husband to Buy Buy Baby just last week. We are in line. He says, "Baby I think you need one of these for your daycare!"

My stomach turned and I replied, "Please don't be the catalyst for me to cuss in Buy Buy Baby."

I have two friends who use those and they say they are fabulous! They have filters that collect the nasty. Even so I don't think I could use one on someone else's kid just for the psychological ick factor.

Oh, I have one! Mom came in once, handed her child off to me and said she left something in the car. Came back in with a 19 inch flat screen with built-in DVD player asking me to set it up "somewhere out of the way" so her daughter could watch her soaps! Seriously, mom said she and DCG usually watch the recorded versions together in the evenings but since mom had been gone on a conference most of the week prior, the little girl had missed too much and she wanted her to catch up before they watched that evening! Seriously! She even went so far as to say that she spent "hours" over the weekend transferring the DVR recordings to DVD so it would be easier for me. "Days of Our Lives"... and the little girl was 4. OMW!!!!!!

The day before Thanksgiving one of her dcm's came in with a whole uncooked turkey and asked her to cook it for her because she was going to be too busy to do it herself!!! Sadly she was so shocked by the request she actually cooked the darn thing!
I would have ruined that turkey. What's she going to say? I brought this turkey to my kids daycare and she ruined it? lol

This lady has some serious boundary issues. Does she think up these things in her sleep and then jots them in the notebook she keeps by her bed?

I have 2, from the same mom....

At closing time I receive a call from her asking if she could be late because their monarch butterflies hatched and one was sitting on her finger drying its wings. She would come as soon as it flew off.....ummmm no.

Just a few months ago, 4 AM phone call from same mom crying. There is a bat in her house, hubby is out of town. Request that my dh or son come over help get it out. My VERY sweet dh went but found no bat. She left the house with her girls, bought new clothes for them and stayed at a hotel until hubby got home two days later.

Hmmm.......maybe I should block her number......

Nope, entirely serious. And I would've thought she was being funny if it weren't for the television she literally brought into my foyer and set on my buffet stand while telling me the story of how she had to Google the instructions for transferring the shows from her cable box to the DVD recorder. I am not judging, but let's just say the TV did not move from that spot all day. When dad picked up I casually mentioned the request, told him that our schedule that day didn't offer an opportunity for her to watch "her shows" and reminded him to take the TV home "so nothing happened to it." Great family, just a little... off.

omgosh! I am shocked, truly shocked. bringing in a TV for a 4 year old for soaps! Its been a long time since i even saw an episode of any soap but there is a lot of inappropriate material on a soap opera. honestly i wouldnt even let my teenager watch that show.
