Default Blocking

How do you block here so you do not see certain posters?

Click on User CP. On the left a menu will come down and one will say "edit ignore list" click on that and add the name.

...sometimes there are times in which it's just easier to block than to continually practice restraint.

I have only blocked two users in my 16 years of being on the internet daycare boards. It takes a lot for me to HAVE to do it but it's sometimes necessary.

Why would you need to block someone's posts ? Couldn't you just not read them ?

Some people prefer to block so they don't have to see the replies on other posts.

Some people prefer to see all of the replies and posts.

To each their own.

It’s not a need. It’s a preference. When I want to be entertained by fiction, I will watch a movie or read a novel.

I don’t come here to quench anyone’s thirst for attention or knowingly interact with an inauthentic character. I visit to learn and interact with peers who have something to share of substance & value to me.

So the ignore option is an excellent choice for me. I chose to do what works best of me.

I just blocked someone and then unblocked them to see how it would work. Just like other forums I've been on, duh, lol.

It works better if you ask people to block you.

It prevents them from wasting their time answering you in the future.

Great idea! I don’t think the request would’ve been respected.

And it would be wrong for me to ask them not to interact with me. It’s my issue, not theirs.

I would've respected it. I think it's a great idea. No use responding to someone who doesn't want and can't even see your opinion.

Cat Herder...while I agree it might work better to ask them to block you, it's easier to just block them.

Also, blocking some one prevents them from being able to PM you.
They can still send one to you but it never arrives in your inbox.

Maybe depending on your personal experience.

I don’t own this site.
I am not a moderator.
I am one of the newer members.
I needed assistance in learning how to block/ignore someone.
I don’t know what is high schoolish about asking for help.
I don’t know what is high schoolish about not wanting to read/interact with an individual I have zero interest in.

I am not asking any other member to ignore the individual.
I am not being mean or nasty to the individual.
I am not asking anyone else on this site to do anything in regards to how I interpret or feel about the person.

So you would have no idea you were blocked, and still carry on as usual responding to their posts? Even though they wouldn't be seen by the blocker? It would be nice if, when someone blocks you, the blocker would also disappear from the blockee's feed. Otherwise, the blockee just looks like a fool who is being ignored and doesn't understand why, kwim? But I understand this forum isn't set up to support that. Just thinking out loud.

I re-read my post and it came off moody. U mad bro. It was not intended as such. I am horribly blunt/literal.

I meant it as in someone who does not want your (vague your, mostly my ) particular viewpoint. Literally.

Some posters are so opposite from one another that they don't value the other side, it hurts their feelings to even read it. It is viewed as personal judgement instead of situational observation/topic discussion.

***I literally would prefer to know when someone does not want to hear my take on things.*** It does not hurt my feelings. A respectful "I appreciate your efforts, but would prefer you abstain from responding to me..." is much better that pulling a "forum Hitler".

It allows me to direct my energy to someone who does understand my intent. I come here to enjoy my water cooler visit. I love debates. I work alone. I never want to hurt feelings, I don't want to have to sugar coat or walk on eggshells either, though.

I have never been the subject of a pm attack. Who does that?? Nah, don't tell me...

Better clarified?

When "how do I...." posts are posted as open threads rather than via a PM, it is beneficial to everyone.

Some times new members don't know where to go for help, who the mods are or how to PM.

Also, mods aren't always available for help 24/7 so sometimes asking the general forum members is faster, quicker and easier.

Thank you (and the U mad bro was me talking to me... yep I do that to. Remember I work alone. )

I have blocked a few users, not in the last year, though. It does make the forum more enjoyable.

No worries

I don’t know about any drama currently going on related to this forum.

It’s a forum. I believed many of my fellow peers who are more seasoned at navigating the site could direct me. Thriftylady did exactly that; I thank her.

Not arguing with you, just a different perspective.

Although the blocker can't see what the blockee has written, other members can. Some of the things I've learned on this site aren't from the initial post, but the responses to the posts.

I don't post on too many forums , so I never saw that expression before ( blocking someone ) I think on other sites there is an ignore button , right ? That's basically the same thing ?

Good point! I guess I was thinking more along the lines of asking direct questions to the blocker and never getting a response.

For the record, I would truly appreciate being told I was blocked so that I didn't look like a total noob in trying to talk with someone directly who wouldn't respond to me. I just think it would be courteous. But, if someone is so annoyed with me that they want to block me, I'm sure courtesy is the last thing on their mind.

HA HAAAAA!

Edited to add: I know I irritate a lot of people in my life since I am also extremely blunt. I am constantly working on my social skills and trying to improve...often imitating those that I think have what I wish I did. Sometimes, though, my Aspie bluntness just comes right on out and while I think everyone appreciates that I am being honest and to the point...most people do not. I am working on not apologizing as often as I used to, though, since the people that KNOW me know that this is how I am and I am not saying anything to hurt another's feelings. I actually get quite embarrassed when I learn that I have hurt someone's feelings.

Don't worry, entropy! It's not you! I think you're great, for the record. I truly appreciate your honesty.

To end everyone's curiosity, it's me that she wanted to block. And maybe one other... Who i won't call out by name.

And I'm totally fine with it. We never did click. I think this was the wrong platform in which to do it, but maybe that's just me. I think it should've been handled privately via PM to a moderator. She's been here plenty long enough to know who the moderators are. I think she just wanted me to know that she was blocking me.

But like I said, no hard feelings! Block away! I guess some people just need more control over their online environment than others. I like diverse opinions, she doesn't. It's not right or wrong, just a personality difference and I'm cool with that.

Kid, if you unblock me and see this post, just know that you haven't hurt my feelings and my day will not be any darker. I mean absolutely no offense or have any ill intentions. I enjoyed your input, but also understand that I can be opinionated and a little much to handle sometimes.

So I will avoid your posts/threads in the future. I won't be blocking you for the reasons I stated above. But I will steer clear. :-) Truly, no hard feelings at all from me.

I can only speak for myself so this isn't something I think Kid or anyone would think....

I don't read usernames when I read posts. I never have or will. Once I read a post and if it stands out to me as something REALLY brilliant or something not so brilliant, I look up to see the username. If it's anywhere in the middle I don't see who wrote it.

So if a name keeps coming up and the content is something that I find ficticious or having motives I can't adrress... then I have to block. It's only happened twice so my threshold is very high.

I never want to have preconceived notions or history when I read posts. With brilliant, I want a future so I look. With the other end of the spectrum, I don't want to invest in the present or future.

Just my own way.

For someone who agrees that this should have been handled privately, why would you post this?

If a member (KidGrind in particular) chooses to block someone, it's HER business to tell others who it is.

If she wanted to satisfy everyone's curiosity about who it was that she blocked, SHE would have posted it publically instead of PM'ing you privately.

Since I know no one can block me as admin , and as much as I like to see people conversing , I expect this forum to be of a professional "childcare" relate nature . Other conversations can be handled through your Facebook or twitter account. I really don't want the drama creeping in here .

Also, I am surprised no one has used the new button I've created.

Respectfully, as the blocked person, I believe that makes it my business also. I think this thread has been very informative and fun, and for the most part, civil and cordial. I was afraid it would go downhill and I'm so glad it didn't.

I would have to agree. I never look at who is posting, only what the subject matter is. I look through threads to see if it will help me in daycare.
Sorry, I needed to try out the new sign...

I think the whole blocking issue is quite interesting. Personally I like reading view points that differ from mine & sometimes they might annoy me, but I'd never want to block them! It causes me to delve deeper into my own beliefs, while at the same time, considering an opposite view point. I find it very educational and would never chose to block someone who is a polar opposite of me!

Love the tag!

Agreed mom2many. There are several posters here that I don't always agree with, but I value their input. They've even changed my mind on some topics, on occasion. If I had blocked them, I would've missed out on that experience.

For me, it’s not about someone being polar opposite than me.
As I stated earlier I have zero interest in a particular individual.
Their words don’t offer any type of learning or enjoyment to my experience on this forum.

I have an option to ignore.
There are dozens of peers that I learn and grow from on this site.
Their knowledge, experience, advice and generosity helps me evolve as a childcare professional.
This forum isn’t a popularity contest.
I am sure many can do without my words or presence on this forum.
They have an option to ignore me.
I am good with whatever works for them.
I focus on my peers that add positively & development to the career I’ve chosen.
This site isn’t about me or anyone I choose to ignore.
It isn’t about who I don’t gel with.
For me it is simply about the wonderful and equally trying profession I’ve chosen. It’s my chance to meet at the water cooler. In careers I’ve had physical peers, when certain people were at the water cooler I didn’t approach. When they joined a chat, I excused myself. I see the ignore option as an internet version of my standard method of operation.

I’ve learned a lot from NannyDe, BlackCat, MV, Cat Herder, Meeko, ThriftyLady, Enthro and the list goes on. In truth, I don’t have the same perspective they do any given day. I don’t have the same opinion often times. When we disagree, not one of them seems to get offended or interpret it as a personal attack.

Even within this thread I can read things were typed that were the farthest from my reality or the situation. Things were made up. The how or why doesn’t matter.

This thread took a turn I truly didn’t expect it to . I thought it would end with one of my peers guiding me through the steps. I am 100% respectful of anyone on this forum operating in a manner that works best for them and their learning experience. I don’t have to be part of the audience.

I’ll end with this:

The point of this post was not me or anyone I choose to ignore. It was to learn how to do it. So the goal was met. Ignoring someone does’t take anything away from anyone. The person still has a voice, opinion and the interaction with those who appreciate their perspective.

I think if I was blocked I would (a) not even notice and (b) not really care.

Being new at this business of daycare, I'm in a continual state of learning. I visit this forum to learn and to offer support, more than anything, and maybe provide a little comic relief, as I feel my advice is really just a re-hashing of what others have said.

I'm not here to cause trouble, there are some threads/posts that I see & roll my eyes at, or I think to myself "here we go again", but whatever, I usually read them anyway out of boredom, I just don't respond.

But in the end, when all is said & done, I have gained much from this forum but I will never lose sleep over it.

And as I tell my dds, you don't have to be everyone's best friend, you don't have to like everyone or be liked by them, but you should be respectful (for what it's worth).

I'm giving myself a but to everyone on here a .
