Default Insurance When Caring For Family

I am currently licensed caring for multiple families. I have decided to go legally unlicensed and will only continue to care for my niece. Because I am licensed, I currently have business liability insurance. Do I still need this coverage once I am unlicensed and caring for family only?

It depends on your state standards. http://daycare.com/states.html

I think for most family daycare, their homeowners insurance would suffice but maybe DCI will think otherwise.

Since I am legally unlicensed, I have not been able to get any.

DCI will not cover a legally unlicensed provider in any state - essentially when I talked to them and asked why, if I was working legally, couldn't I get covered and was told it's not worth it for them for the few kids I had ... I am covered by State Farm for liability thru my homeowners policy

We indeed to not provided coverage for unlicensed providers. You may be operating legally and in accordance with state rules but we are unable to provide insurance coverage for those who are not regulated by a state agency. For providers who are not licensed a rider on your homeowners policy is certainly better than no coverage at all. Just be aware they generally only cover a certain number of children and do not offer child abuse or accident medical coverage.

I just had this chat with my MIL.

So, basically what you're saying is that because we aren't licensed, even if we're operating within our states legal regulations; we can't get insurance at all?

So what are we supposed to do then? get a rider on our homeowners and hope nothing happens?
